Civil Appeals and Writs

Occasionally, lawsuits must proceed to the next level ~ review by the appellate courts.

The appellate process differs significantly from trial court proceedings. Appellate courts do not try cases over; rather, their function is to review the lower court proceedings for error.  This requires a thorough review of the record in the trial court to determine if substantial evidence supports to judge's decision or jury's verdict and whether the trial judge correctly applied the law or abused his or her discretion during the proceedings.

Our extensive experience with civil appeals and writs allows us to evaluate the relative strengths and weaknesses of any potential appeal, whether from the perspective of the appellant or respondent, and to properly guide our clients through the appellate process.
